What is Current Transformer
A current transformer (CT) is a type of transformer that is used to measure electric current. It works on the principle of magnetic induction and is used to step down high currents to lower, more manageable levels that can be safely measured by instruments and devices such as ammeters and wattmeters.
A current transformer consists of a primary winding, which is the high-current circuit through which the current to be measured flows, and a secondary winding, which is connected to an ammeter or other measuring instrument. The primary winding is typically a single turn or a few turns of heavy gauge wire, while the secondary winding has many turns of fine wire. The ratio of the number of turns in the primary winding to the number of turns in the secondary winding determines the step-down ratio of the current transformer.
Current transformers are commonly used in power transmission and distribution systems, as well as in industrial settings, to measure and monitor electrical currents for a variety of purposes, including power monitoring, protective relaying, and energy management.

The Functions of Current Transformer.
The primary function of a current transformer (CT) is to step down high currents to a level that can be safely measured by instruments and devices such as ammeters, wattmeters, and protective relays. Some of the main functions of current transformers include:
Current measurement: The primary function of a current transformer is to measure the magnitude and direction of electric current in a circuit. The CT provides an accurate and reliable measurement of the current flow without the need to interrupt the circuit.
Protection: Current transformers are commonly used in protection relays to detect and isolate fault currents in power systems. When a fault occurs, the CT senses the abnormal current and sends a signal to the protection relay to trip the circuit breaker and isolate the fault.
Power monitoring: CTs are used to monitor power consumption in various applications, such as in industries, commercial buildings, and residential homes. By measuring the current flow, the CT can provide data on the power consumption of individual devices or entire systems.
Energy management: CTs can be used for energy management purposes, such as load shedding, peak shaving, and demand management. By measuring the current flow, the CT can provide data on the energy usage of various systems, allowing for better management and optimization of energy resources.
Ground fault detection: Current transformers are also used in ground fault detection systems to detect ground faults in electrical circuits. The CT senses the unbalanced current flow caused by the ground fault and sends a signal to the ground fault detector, which trips the circuit breaker and isolates the fault.
